I run lvl5's on this character in a carrier and make no secret about it. No one has ever come and bothered me who wasn't in the area anyways. So it's really not as foolish as you might think. People aren't going to run search agents on specific players and spend weeks hoping that they *might* show up and run a mission in a carrier. And even then, you still have to actually catch and kill/ransom them. That's not how piracy works, it's opportunistic in nature. I killed a carrier with some buddies today, didn't know there was a carrier in system until it undocked right behind me and sent my ship flying.
Anyways, you should fit your ship to survive both pvp and pve. People will try to go after a missioning carrier if they have the resources to take it down. As such you need to be prepared to fight at all times. Do not shield tank your thanny, that is a terrible idea and the shield thanny fit posted is horrible. A thanny can tank 2-3x that damage and be cap stable as an armor tanker. That said, your armor tank setup should be: 2x reps, DCII, 2x EANM's. Ignore mission rat damage types, carriers are epic overkill so you will almost never use both reps. Your mids should contain a warp disruptor, ECCM and sensor booster (scan res). The rest should be devoted to cap recharge and I recommend CCC rigs.
The reason for the setup above is very simple, a carrier is a lucrative target, you will have people try to attack you. The ECCM makes you damn near unjammable so ECM boats are little concern. It also makes you more difficult to probe. You are still a giant target on the scanner probes, but not nearly as big as you would be without and that gives you a bit more time to notice someone probing you. The sensor booster gives you a BS level lock time, that's kinda important for both pve and pvp. The warp disruptor is so that in the event that you are attacked, you can actually kill your attackers. Without it they can warp off when heavily damaged, repair and then warp back to continue their attack. Point them and suddenly they find they won't be leaving in anything but their pod.
That brings us to the final point, it's a f*cking carrier. It can absorb lots of damage and dish it out too. Your best survival option is to avoid combat but if forced into it you should not hesitate to fight back. Though a titan or 50 dreads may insta-kill you, low sec pirates don't have that kind of stuff normally. From my own experience, you will typically be facing a handful of BS's. You can take that solo in a carrier. It's risky and you will lose a lot of isk in drones but it can be done. On that note, carry lots of non-fighter drones. You will want tons of heavy ECM drones along with normal combat drones. A few heavy TD drones wouldn't be a bad idea either.
So far I haven't mentioned high slots, this is because you really have some options there. Filling them with DCU's will give you much higher damage allowing you to complete missions faster and really chew up anyone who attacks but raw dps has it's limits. Neuts are a very good option for countering attackers. I saw a carrier get killed by a pilgrim and 2x BS's cause he couldn't counter neut the pilgrim. Even just 2x heavy neuts would have turned the tables. -----------------------------------------------------
